    What Is Profile Grinding

    Profile grinding is used extensively for the machining of curved components.It removes a certain amount of material from the surface of the work-piece through the grinding method in order to achieve the machining precision requirements.

    It projects the work-piece at a magnification of 20-50 times onto a product shape drawing that is projected in advance like a shadow picture.Then the grinding wheel is operated by numerical control or manual control, and copy grinding is performed with the workpiece overlaid onto the projected drawing.Therefore the tolerance can be guaranteed within 0.002mm.

    Basic Structures Of Optical Profile Grinder

    N9015 and N9017A are the commonly used optical profile ginding machines. Their basic structures are similar, both of them composed of bed, coordinate table, grinding wheel holder and light screen. The workpieces to be ground are fixed on the coordinate table by using special clamping plate and precision vise, etc. Then the table can make longitudinal, transverse and vertical movements. The grinding wheel is rotated for the main movement, and at the same time in the vertical guideway of the grinding wheel frame for linear reciprocating motion, the grinding wheel frame can be used for longitudinal and transverse feeding movement and rotation along the vertical axis and rotation along the horizontal axis.

    How Does Profile Grinding Working?

    Profile Grinding Is A Kind of Machining With Very Good Performance for Grinding Curved Surfaces, Which Plays A Great Role In Mold Processing.

    Before the optical curve grinder grinds in the molding, according to the size and precision of the workpiece to be grinden, use the plotter to engrave the required processing graphics on the film according to the magnification of 20 times, 25 times and 50 times on the tracing paper. When grinding, the enlarged drawing is mounted on the light screen, and the optical projection magnification system of the grinder is utilized to image the shadows of the parts to be processed and the grinding wheel onto the light screen, and then the grinding head is operated by hand to make longitudinal and transverse movements, so that the cutting edges of the grinding wheel grind along the shape of the workpiece until the contour of the image of the workpiece is completely overlapped with the drawing line of the enlarged drawing, and only then the grinding process is completed.

    The Process of Profile Grinding.

    The workpiece to be machined is clamped on the table of the grinding machine and held in place by means of clamps or vacuum chucks, etc. Mount the grinding wheel on the spindle of the grinding machine and rotate it with the spindle motor. The grinding wheel is dressed using the dressing device on the grinding machine to ensure that the surface is smooth and correctly shaped. The grinding wheel’s position, speed and feed are adjusted by the control system to make contact with the workpiece and grind it. The taper of the grinding wheel and the amount of dressing can be adjusted according to the machining requirements. The shape and accuracy of the surface of the processed workpiece are detected by means of an optical inspection system or coordinate measuring equipment, etc., and the necessary adjustments and corrections are made according to the inspection results.

     

    How Does Profile Grinding Control The Precision of Workpiece?

    During the grinding process, the grinding wheel and the workpiece are cooled by spraying the grinding liquid, and the surface of the workpiece can also be cleaned of abrasive particles and grinding chips. As required, multiple passes of grinding process can be performed on the workpiece to achieve higher precision and surface quality requirements. During the whole process, the optical curve grinder controls and adjusts the grinding parameters, such as the position, speed and feed of the grinding wheel, as well as dressing the shape and taper of the grinding wheel, to realize precise control and processing of the surface shape and precision of the workpiece.

    What Part Does Profile Grinding Machining?

    In the profile molding grinding, due to the limitations of the size of the light screen, generally can only grind 10mmX10mm workpiece.When the size of the workpiece exceeds this limit, then need use of segmented grinding, so the enlarged map should be drawn according to a certain datum line segmentation, and molding grinding according to the datum line of the intersection of the street.

    The optical curve grinding machine uses thin-flake grinding wheels for grinding.It according to the different shapes of the grinding surface, then correct the circumferential end face of the grinding wheel to single beveled edge, double beveled edge, flat and straight shape and convex-concave arc shape, and process the work-pieces by point-by-point grinding.

    High hardness workpieces: (HRA) 88-96, for example,  tungsten steel or cemented carbide, and occasionally high-speed steel workpieces. Generally,  the processing of these parts need it,like connector punches and punches, terminals, precision half-stroke punches, lower die inserts and stripper inserts.

    Projection Grinder In MLS

    The famous optical projection grinder is from Japan (AMADA Amada Group), its spindle speed can reach 30,000 rpm, up and down the stroke is 110mm, up and down the stroke speed of 400 times / mm, the processing accuracy of 0.002mm within the machine’s Z small size of a single side of the 0.0001mm, the processing of the Z small R angle of R0.03mm, the outer R angle of R0.02mm, the processing of shaped punches and punches and punches, precision half-stroke punch, the lower die into the block and the stripper plate into the workpiece.
